Chantix Lawsuit

Varenicline, marketed by Pfizer as Chantix, is a prescription medication used to treat smoking addiction.

Chantix Uses

Chantix treats smoking addiction by reducing the cravings for nicotine. In addition, Chantix reduces the pleasurable effects of cigarettes and other tobacco products.

Side Effects

In July 2009, the FDA issued a black box warning for Chantix – the agency's strongest safety warning. This warning was added due to public reports of side effects including depression, suicidal thoughts, and suicidal actions.

Chantix has been linked to increased risk of stroke and heart attack. A recent study found that taking Chantix might increase the risk of cardiovascular events by as much as 72 percent. The author of the study, Dr. Sonal Singh of Johns Hopkins University concluded, "All smokers who take Chantix are at risk for heart attack, stroke, or other cardiovascular event."

On June 16, 2011, the FDA issued a safety announcement that Chantix "may be associated with a small, increased risk of certain cardiovascular events in patients who have cardiovascular disease."
